8 Ways To Efficiently Install Asphalt Milling for a Driveway

Asphalt milling is a process used to create a smooth, flat surface for driveways. There are many benefits to using asphalt on driveways. Asphalt may last as long as 15 years and doesn’t require much maintenance. The process of paving a driveway with asphalt isn’t difficult, but it does require heavy equipment that most homeowners do not possess.

Before you hire a contractor for asphalt installation, it’s important that you understand the system to ensure your contractor is doing the right thing. These steps will guide you through the process of obtaining optimal asphalt installation.

Evaluate the existing driveway by driving a vehicle on it. Pick the largest vehicle that will use the driveway for the test. Look for tire ruts or sideways movement of the subgrade under your wheel loads. If a weak subgrade is found, cut out the weak part and replace it with brick.

Examine the asphalt millings, and determine the type of material you are using and if it has a lot of fine material or if the material is coarse. For coarse asphalt, use an added emulsion percent of 2.5 to 3 percent and for fine material, use an added emulsion percent of 3 to 3.5 percent. If your mixture is cold, choose an emulsion that’s been designed for that type of asphalt.

Check the size of the millings before crushing them to make sure they are smaller than two inches. If they are larger, crush them so they will fit through the two-inch screen opening.

To make a blended emulsion, combine the millings in a pug mill with emulsion to create a homogeneous material.

Move the mixture to the driveway location using a dump truck

Place the mixture into a spreader or asphalt paver, and spread the material with the spreader or pavement. Place 3-5 inches of the recycled mix over a soil subgrade. If rock is already under the recycled material, you can use less material depending on the size of vehicles on your driveway.

Start by milling the material with a 25-ton pneumatic-tired roller first and then using a 12-ton or vibratory double drum roller. To avoid the materials from sticking to the roller, provide water on the steel wheels.

Lay down a chip seal mix over the recycled milled pavement mat or a 1.25-inch layer of new asphalt surface course. These materials seal the surface of the recycled pavement.

Advantages/Benefits Of Asphalt Milling

The process of asphalt milling helps to restore deteriorating roads by removing part of the pavement and creating one with a smoother surface, perfect for repaving. It also makes it unnecessary to remove all of the existing asphalt before placing a new surface down because the underlying subbase can be used.

That means that this process is usually cheaper when compared to demolition or repaving. There are many other advantages to asphalt milling.

  • It Is Affordable: One of the main benefits of asphalt milling is that your new pavement doesn’t have to be produced by using raw materials and it saves you money while doing so. You also don’t need to demolish your existing sublevel with an asphalt milling job, since it should remain intact. The process is quicker and less labor intensive, which helps save on costs.
  • It is Environmentally Friendly: Asphalt milling is quickly becoming an environmentally friendly industry. The asphalt that is ground from the pavement is recycled and put to good use in another project. Asphalt milling saves companies time, money, and resources by recycling the asphalt for future projects with less environmental impact.
  • Specific areas can be fixed: How asphalt milling can help save money for you is by offering the option to fix specific areas of their driveway or parking lot. By doing this, an asphalt company does not need to repave the entire surface. Instead, they would come in and quickly address damaged areas through milling before applying new pavement.

  • It is less time-consuming: Making a parking lot or driveway patch can take a lot of time. This could leave you, your family, or your employees without somewhere to park for several days. You can just repair the surface with asphalt milling. In less than 24 hours, you’ll be able to use the new surface.
  • Other Benefits: Asphalt paving can provide many potential benefits, but it has some key advantages such as improving drainage, removing ruts, and serving as a suitable texture for new pavement applications

When Do You Know You Need Asphalt Milling?

When is milling the best option for your paving project? The right answer is that milling is perfect when:

  • Your pavement has started to “unravel” from the top down
  • The cracking on the pavement is allowing water to enter the tiles and causes deterioration from the top down.
  • The top layer of the asphalt is thrusting
  • Given that the pavement is in a drainage area, drainage swales need to be cut so the water can flow through.
  • Pavement is showing signs of low and moderate severity cracks caused by overloading traffic or loss of base.
